How To Give That Extra Space To a Small Room

In a small space, every single thing counts..! Confined, small space will make you feel congested, uncomfortable, like sitting in a tight dress after having your all-you-can-eat-RM20-buffet.

There are a lot of things to fool the eyes. Furniture settings, lighting techniques and of course, colour blending..! It's all about optical illusion. Here are the ways you could do to give the "extra" space:

1. Always use light colours. Not just relaxing, they make a space look bigger and brighter. Think of natural shades such as sandy beach, the ocean or the sky. It is important to choose a shade lighter for the ceiling to give an illusion of heights, thus makes the room look bigger. Stay away from dark colours as they absorb lights and makes the room looks darker and smaller.

2. Lighting is another key element when playing with space. Make use of natural lights as this is the best shade that makes the room spacious naturally. Don't cover the glass window to allow maximum light in. Try to avoid shadows as much as possible as this will let the room looks darker and smaller.

3. Use horizontal stripes to play with the size. Stripes will not just add attitude, elegance and energy, but if they are played well, they can give the illusion of a longer and wider space.

4. Accessorize your room using mirrors and reflective elements. Add it to your walls, or use mirrored wardrobe or use it on table tops to make space appears to be large and uncluttered. Other reflective materials you can consider is metal or stainless steels, glass vases, crystals, etc.

Sri Lanka Trip

Eid Mubarak is normally celebrated with the family, close relatives and friends. But this time around we decided to make a 'detour'. Dad had some work to do in Sri Lanka so he decided to take us along. After all, it is Eid and family is always where the home is.

I knew a few Sri Lankans back when I was a student, so I checked with them on places to go. I always feel blessed that I have friends from a lot of places in the world and this is just one of a few rare occasions that I can have some good catch up with them.

We took the 11 am flight on the 1st of Sept 2011 and we arrived at Colombo International Airport at about 12-ish am Colombo time on the 2nd of Sept. We stayed at Pegasus Reef, Wattala. A three star resort by the beach. There was a minor reconstruction when we arrived. We also learned that this resort was badly destroyed by Tsunami in 2006.

We went to Colombo the next day and we were amazed with the number of Noritake dealer around the city. We can't help ourselves, well, my mother in particular, and she ended up purchasing 1 set of 12, Noritake tableware.

On the third day, we checked out early in the morning and went to Matale distict, in the central province of Sri Lanka. The plan was to reach Sigiriya on the same day but due to the heavy traffic, and the day is getting late, we decided to check in the hotel and climb the rocks on the next day. In Matale, we stayed at Kassapa Lion Rocks Resort. The reception was basic but service was very efficient and good. The buffet dinner was great too.

We checked out the next morning and went to Sigiriya, the ancient rock fortress. It is one of Sri Lanka's major attraction and it was declared as World Heritage Centre by UNESCO. (Read more: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/202). We climbed to the tip and saw the ruined kingdom that once witnessed the civilization of Ceylon during the reign of King Kassapa I.

RWMF 2011

Malaysia is a country where a lot of world class music festivals are being held at. One of the infamous cultural music festival is Rainforest World Music Festival, a 3 days annualy cultural music festival. It was first held domestically in 1997, but the idea was further developed by the Sarawak state government when they saw a promising potential. And today, Rainforest World Music Festival is one of the most awaited event and people around the globe will meet up once a year, at the valley of Mount Santubong, bounded with a common love of music.

I was thrilled to be apart of the festival that was held on the 8th till the 10th of July 2011. The flight ticket to Kuching was bought last December 2010. Me and my friends (who went there almost every year) decided to buy the tickets early as there was a great deal from AirAsia at the end of last year.

We arrived Kuching on Friday but didn't go to the festival yet. We only went for one day, on Saturday which was day-2 of the festival. The ticket cost us RM110 for a day pass and RM300 for a 3 days pass. From the city, we took a shuttle bus that travels to Sarawak Culturul Village (where RWMF is held every year), Santubong almost every hour at the cost of RM25 per person for a return trip. The weather was very very hot and humid and I can't recall how many bottles of water I drank that day.

Before the concert that night, we took a tour to the ethnic houses in the cultural village. We went to the Iban Long House, Melanau Tall House, Malay House, Chinese Farmhouse, Orang Ulu Longhouse and more traditional houses of most major ethnics in Sawarak.
